Where Gemini is available
Google lists the countries on its page where you can use the Gemini web app. It covers almost every country, including Hong Kong, Macao and Venezuela, which ChatGPT and Claude don't support. The exceptions:
| Not available | Notes |
|---|---|
| Mainland China | Only for Google Workspace accounts, and Google services are blocked on the mainland network anyway |
| Russia, Belarus | |
| Iran, North Korea, Syria, Cuba | Sanctioned countries |
| Afghanistan |
The mobile app can lag behind the web app in some countries. The IP unlock test checks your IP against the list and shows the date it was last checked.
Why Gemini says it isn't available
Gemini shows "Gemini isn't currently supported in your country" or a similar message for several different reasons:
| Cause | How to tell |
|---|---|
| Your IP is in an unsupported country | The IP unlock test shows Gemini as "not available" |
| A VPN or proxy routes you elsewhere | The country in the unlock test isn't where you are |
| Your Google account is too young | You're under the minimum age in your country, or no birthday is set |
| A work or school account | The admin hasn't turned Gemini on for your organization |
| Account country | Your Google account is linked to an unsupported country |
Step 1: check your IP
Open the IP unlock test. If Gemini is "not available" and you're not in that country, turn off the VPN or proxy, or choose a server in your own country. If the country looks wrong on a normal connection, look the IP up in the IP lookup; location databases sometimes misplace new address ranges.
Google doesn't block VPN addresses as strictly as ChatGPT or Netflix, but a VPN server in an unsupported country blocks Gemini just like being there.
Step 2: check your Google account
- Age: sign in to your Google account and make sure your birthday is set. Gemini requires a minimum age that varies by country.
- Work or school account: try a personal Gmail account. If Gemini works there, ask your admin to enable it.
- Account country: Google ties each account to a country based on where you usually use it. You can see it in the Google terms of service country section of your account. After a move, it updates over time.
Step 3: clear old location data
Sign out of Google, clear cookies for google.com and gemini.google.com, and sign in again. Google caches your location, so after turning off a VPN it may take a fresh session to notice.
Check from your own device
The command-line test connects to Gemini and the other services from the computer or server you run it on:
curl -sL ipdidi.com/unlock | bash
On Windows PowerShell: irm ipdidi.com/unlock.ps1 | iex. More in the command-line options.
FAQ
Is Gemini available in Hong Kong?
Yes. Hong Kong and Macao are on Google's list of countries where you can use the Gemini web app, unlike ChatGPT and Claude.
Is Gemini available in China?
Only for Google Workspace accounts, and Google's services are blocked on the mainland network, so in practice it doesn't work there without a connection that routes outside the mainland.
Why does Gemini say it's not available when I'm in a supported country?
The usual causes are a VPN or proxy in another country, a work or school account where the admin has turned Gemini off, or an age requirement on your Google account. Check your IP in the IP unlock test first.
Does Gemini work with a VPN?
Usually, as long as the VPN server is in a supported country. Google is less strict about VPN addresses than streaming services, but you may see more CAPTCHAs.
