Public or private: which one do you need?
You have two IP addresses, and the right one depends on what you're doing. If you're not sure of the difference, read what an IP address is first.
- Public IP: the address websites and online services see. You need it to set up remote access, allow your address on a server or firewall, check what a VPN shows, or report a ban.
- Private (local) IP: the address your router gives a device at home, usually starting with
192.168.,10.or172.16.to172.31.. You need it to set up port forwarding, a printer, a game console or a media server.
Find your public IP address
The quickest way is to open the My IP page. It shows your public IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, your approximate location, your internet provider and whether the address belongs to a home, mobile or datacenter network.
You can also get it from a terminal or command prompt:
curl ipdidi.com
On Windows 10 and 11, curl is built in; in PowerShell type curl.exe ipdidi.com. The command prints only your IP address, which makes it handy for scripts.
Your computer's network settings don't show your public IP. They show the private address your router assigned. Only a website or service on the internet can tell you the public one.
Find your private IP on Windows
- Press Win + R, type
cmdand press Enter. - Type
ipconfigand press Enter. - Look for IPv4 Address under your active adapter (Wi-Fi or Ethernet).
Without the command line: open Settings > Network & internet, choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet, then click your network. The address is listed as IPv4 address.
Find your private IP on Mac

- Click Wi-Fi or Ethernet, then Details next to your network.
- Open the TCP/IP tab. Your address is next to IP address.
In Terminal you can type ipconfig getifaddr en0 (Wi-Fi on most Macs).
Find your IP on iPhone and iPad

- Tap the (i) next to the network you're connected to.

Find your IP on Android
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Internet (or Connections > Wi-Fi on Samsung).
- Tap the gear or arrow next to your Wi-Fi network.

Find your IP on Linux
Open a terminal and type ip -4 addr or hostname -I. The address next to inet on your active interface (often wlan0 or eth0) is your private IP.
Find your router's IP and all connected devices
Your router usually has the address 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1 or 10.0.0.1. On Windows it appears as Default Gateway in ipconfig; on Mac it's Router in the TCP/IP tab.
Open that address in a browser and sign in to the router's admin page. The list of connected devices (often called DHCP clients or Attached devices) shows the private IP of every device on your network, including printers, smart TVs and consoles. The router's status page also shows its WAN or internet address, which is your public IP unless your provider uses carrier-grade NAT.
Find the IP of a website or another address
To find the server address of a website, or to see where any IP address is located and which network it belongs to, use the IP lookup. It accepts both IP addresses and domain names.
FAQ
Why does my IP checker show a different address than my computer?
Your computer shows its private address on your home network. IP checkers show the public address your router uses on the internet. Both are correct; they're just different addresses.
Why does my IP address keep changing?
Most providers give home and mobile customers dynamic addresses that change when you reconnect or after a set time. If you need one that never changes, ask your provider for a static IP.
Why does my public IP show the wrong city?
IP location comes from databases that map address blocks to places. Providers often register blocks at their regional hub, so the city shown can be tens or hundreds of kilometers away. It's normal and doesn't mean anything is wrong.
How do I find my IP address while using a VPN?
With the VPN connected, open the My IP page. It should show the VPN server's address and location. If it still shows your own provider, the VPN isn't working; see how to check if your VPN is working.
