YouTube Premium countries: where it works and why it's blocked

YouTube Premium is sold in more than 100 countries, and YouTube checks both your location and your payment country. Here's where it's available and how to fix "not available in your country".

Where YouTube Premium is available

YouTube Premium (ad-free videos, background play, downloads and YouTube Music Premium) is available in more than 100 countries: North America, most of Europe and Latin America, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, most of Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand and many countries in the Middle East and Africa. YouTube keeps the official list on its Premium availability page.

It isn't available in mainland China (where YouTube itself is blocked), Russia, Iran, North Korea, Syria, Cuba, Afghanistan, Myanmar and much of Central Africa.

The IP unlock test shows whether Premium is offered in the country your IP is in.

Why YouTube says Premium isn't available

You'll see "YouTube Premium isn't available in your country" or the sign-up button disappears when:

What happens when you travel

If you already have Premium, the benefits keep working when you travel to another country where Premium is available. In a country without Premium, some benefits may stop until you return. Downloads need you to go online at least once every 30 days to stay playable.

If you move for good, cancel and sign up again in the new country, because prices and the payment method are tied to the country where you signed up.

Can you get YouTube Premium cheaper in another country?

Prices differ a lot between countries, which is why "YouTube Premium cheapest country" is a popular search. Signing up through a VPN in a cheaper country breaks YouTube's terms, and since 2024 YouTube has been cancelling memberships whose payment country doesn't match where they're used. The cancellation usually comes after the paid period ends, so it can look like it worked at first.

Legitimate ways to pay less:

Family plan location problems

Family members have to live at the same address as the manager. If YouTube sees a member regularly using a different country or network, it can remove them from the family. A VPN on one member's phone can trigger this too, so check what country each device shows in the IP unlock test.

FAQ

Which countries is YouTube Premium available in?

More than 100, including the US, Canada, the UK, the EU, Japan, South Korea, India, Hong Kong, Taiwan, most of Latin America and Southeast Asia. It isn't offered in mainland China, Russia, Iran or Afghanistan.

Can I use YouTube Premium in a country where it isn't available?

Some benefits may stop while you're there. They come back when you return to a country where Premium is sold.

Will a VPN get my YouTube Premium cancelled?

Using a VPN for privacy while watching usually doesn't. Signing up through a VPN in a cheaper country can, because the payment country doesn't match where the account is used.

Why does YouTube Premium say "not available in your country" when it is?

Your IP may be in another country because of a VPN or proxy, or your payment method or Google account is set to a different country. Turn off the VPN and check the country your IP shows in the IP unlock test.
