Netflix VPN or proxy error: why it happens and how to fix it

Netflix shows "You seem to be using a VPN or proxy" when your IP doesn't look like a normal home connection in your country. Here's how to find out what it sees and fix it.

What the error means

Netflix licenses films and series country by country, so it has to know where you are. It works that out from your IP address. When the address belongs to a VPN, a proxy or a server in a data center, Netflix can't trust the location and stops playback with a message like:

"You seem to be using a VPN or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again." Older versions say "an unblocker or proxy". The error code usually starts with M7111-5059 in a browser or F7111-5059 in apps, or shows as E106.

Sometimes there's no error at all: the app plays, but the catalogue suddenly shrinks or titles you saw yesterday are gone. That is the same detection, handled more quietly.

Step 1: see what Netflix sees

Open the IP unlock test. It shows the country of your IP and whether the address looks like a VPN, proxy or data center. If Netflix is marked "may be blocked", you've found the reason.

Then compare the country with where you actually are:

Step 2: turn off anything that changes your IP

Netflix's own advice is to switch off VPNs and proxies, and it's worth being thorough:

If you want to keep the VPN for everything else, use its split tunneling setting to send the Netflix app or browser outside the tunnel.

Step 3: check DNS and IPv6

Even with the right IP, two things can still make your location look inconsistent:

Restart the app or clear the browser cache after any change, because Netflix remembers the last location it saw.

Step 4: you're not using a VPN at all

If the error appears on a normal home connection, your provider's IP range may have been flagged by mistake. Netflix suggests:

  1. Restart the modem and router, or reset them to default settings, which often gives you a new IP.
  2. Check the address on the IP fraud score page. If it shows a VPN or data center match, write down the IP.
  3. Contact your internet provider with that IP and the country Netflix detects, and ask them to contact Netflix.

Customers on carrier-grade NAT, where many homes share one IP, run into this more often.

Why some VPNs work and others don't

Netflix blocks addresses it recognizes, not VPNs as such. Shared VPN servers used by thousands of people are easy to spot. Addresses that look like home connections, such as residential or dedicated IPs, are blocked far less often. Residential vs datacenter IPs explains the difference.

Keep in mind that Netflix's terms let you watch the catalogue of the country you're in, and that VPNs aren't supported on ad-supported plans or for live events at all. If you travel, Netflix shows the local catalogue of your destination, and your account keeps working.

Check from your own device

The web test reads your IP. To have your computer or server actually connect to Netflix and report whether it gets the full catalogue, run the command-line test:

curl -sL ipdidi.com/unlock | bash

On Windows, use irm ipdidi.com/unlock.ps1 | iex in PowerShell.

FAQ

Why does Netflix say I'm using a VPN when I'm not?

Your IP is probably on a list of VPN or hosting addresses, or your DNS or IPv6 traffic points to a different country than your IP. Restarting the router for a new IP, switching back to your provider's DNS, and contacting your provider fix most cases.

Is it illegal to use a VPN with Netflix?

In most countries using a VPN is legal. It can still break Netflix's terms. Netflix usually responds by blocking the address rather than closing accounts.

Why does Netflix work on my phone but not on my TV?

The two devices may use different connections or DNS settings. A phone on mobile data has a different IP than a TV on Wi-Fi, and smart TVs often use DNS set on the router.

Does Netflix block every VPN?

No. It blocks the addresses it has identified. That list changes daily, so a server that works today may be blocked next week. Run the IP unlock test again after connecting to see how your new address looks.
