TikTok banned countries: where it's blocked and why it won't load

TikTok is unavailable in a handful of countries, either because governments block it or because TikTok left. Here's the list, and how to check whether your connection is the reason TikTok won't load.

Where TikTok is not available

TikTok can be missing for two reasons: a government blocks it, or TikTok itself doesn't operate there. The main countries:

CountrySinceWhy
Mainland ChinaNever launchedByteDance runs Douyin there instead
Hong Kong2020TikTok withdrew after the national security law
India2020Government ban, along with other Chinese apps
Uzbekistan2021Restricted by the regulator
Afghanistan2022Banned by the Taliban government
Jordan2022Blocked by the government
Somalia2023Government ban
Kyrgyzstan2024Government ban
Iran, North KoreaBlocked along with most foreign platforms

Other bans have been temporary: Nepal blocked TikTok from 2023 to 2024, and Albania for a year from 2025. In the United States, TikTok remains available after its US business was moved to a US-led company in 2026. Many governments, including the US, Canada, the UK and the EU institutions, ban TikTok only on official devices, which doesn't affect ordinary users.

The IP unlock test checks your IP against the list it uses and shows the date it was last updated.

How TikTok knows where you are

Unlike most websites, the TikTok app doesn't only look at your IP address:

That's why changing only the IP often doesn't change what the app shows, and why the website on a computer can behave differently from the phone app.

TikTok won't load: what to check

If you're in a country where TikTok is available but it still won't load:

  1. Check your IP's country in the IP unlock test. A VPN or proxy may route you through a country where TikTok is blocked.
  2. Test the connection. The unlock test's "Can your browser reach these sites?" check shows whether tiktok.com is reachable at all. If it fails, your network, a firewall or DNS filtering is blocking it.
  3. Check DNS. School, office and parental-control networks often block TikTok through DNS. The DNS leak test shows which DNS servers you're using.
  4. Switch networks. Try mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, or the other way round, to see whether one network blocks it.
  5. Update the app and clear its cache. Old versions sometimes fail to connect after TikTok changes its servers.

Using TikTok with a VPN

TikTok doesn't block VPN addresses as aggressively as streaming services. The bigger problems are a VPN server in a country where TikTok is banned, and the SIM and region checks above. If TikTok is banned where you live, using it may break local law, so check what applies to you first.

Check from your own device

The command-line test connects to TikTok and other services from the computer or server you run it on:

curl -sL ipdidi.com/unlock | bash

On Windows PowerShell: irm ipdidi.com/unlock.ps1 | iex. More in the command-line options.

FAQ

Which countries have banned TikTok?

Nationwide bans or blocks are in place in India, Afghanistan, Jordan, Somalia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Iran and North Korea. TikTok isn't offered in mainland China and left Hong Kong in 2020. Many other countries ban it only on government devices.

Is TikTok banned in the US?

No. A 2024 law required TikTok's US business to be sold, and the app stayed available after the US operations were moved to a US-led company. It is still banned on federal government devices and in many state governments.

Why does TikTok say "no network connection" when my internet works?

Usually because TikTok thinks you're in a country where it isn't available, often because of a SIM card from that country, or because your network blocks TikTok's servers. Check your IP and whether tiktok.com is reachable in the IP unlock test.

Can I use TikTok in China?

The international TikTok app doesn't work with Chinese SIM cards or on the mainland network. Douyin is the version for mainland China.
