What error code 73 means
The message reads "Disney+ is only available in certain regions" or "Sorry, Disney+ is not available in your region", often with error code 73. Disney+ shows it when the location it reads from your IP address is outside the countries it serves, or when it can't trust that location because the address belongs to a VPN, proxy or data center.
It can appear when you sign up, when you open the app, or in the middle of a show if your connection changes.
Where Disney+ is available
Disney+ is available in North America, most of Europe and Latin America, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, much of Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand, parts of the Middle East and North Africa, and South Africa. It isn't available in:
| Not available | Notes |
|---|---|
| Mainland China, Macao | Hong Kong and Taiwan do have Disney+ |
| Russia, Belarus | Disney+ never launched there |
| Most of sub-Saharan Africa | South Africa is the main exception |
| Iran, North Korea, Syria, Cuba | Sanctioned countries |
In India, Disney content comes through JioHotstar rather than the Disney+ app, and in some countries Disney+ is sold together with local partners. The IP unlock test checks your IP against the current list.
Step 1: check your IP's country and type
Open the IP unlock test. Look at the Disney+ row:
- "Not available": your IP is in a country without Disney+. If you're actually somewhere else, a VPN, proxy or office network is routing you through that country.
- "May be blocked": the country is fine, but the address belongs to a VPN, proxy or data center. This is the most common cause of error 73 in supported countries.
- "Available": the IP looks fine, so check DNS and IPv6 next.
Step 2: fix the cause
- Turn off VPNs and proxies, including VPN features built into antivirus apps and browser extensions. Or use split tunneling to keep the Disney+ app outside the VPN.
- Check DNS. Smart DNS services and custom DNS servers can answer from another country. The DNS leak test shows who resolves your lookups.
- Check IPv6. If your VPN only covers IPv4, Disney+ may see two different locations. The leak checks on the My IP page show this.
- Restart the app and router. Restarting the router often gets you a new IP, and the app re-checks your location when it starts.
Watching while traveling
Your subscription keeps working when you travel to another country where Disney+ is available, but you'll see that country's catalogue. In a country without Disney+, the app stops working until you're back.
Disney+ ties your subscription to the country where you signed up and paid. Signing up through a VPN in a country where it's cheaper can break the terms and lead to the subscription being cancelled.
Why some VPNs get through
Disney+ blocks addresses it recognizes, not every VPN. Shared VPN servers used by many people are easy to spot, while dedicated or residential IPs look like ordinary homes. Residential vs datacenter IPs explains the difference. After connecting, run the IP unlock test again to see how the new address looks.
FAQ
How do I fix Disney Plus error code 73?
Turn off any VPN or proxy, restart the app and router, and check that your DNS and IPv6 don't point to another country. If you're in a supported country without a VPN and still see it, contact Disney+ support with the IP address shown in the IP unlock test.
Why does Disney+ say it's not available in my region when it is?
Your IP probably belongs to a VPN, proxy or hosting network, or your location databases place it in another country. Check the address in the IP fraud score page to see whether it's flagged.
Is Disney+ available in China?
No. Disney+ isn't available in mainland China or Macao. It is available in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Can I use Disney+ with a VPN?
Disney+ blocks many VPN addresses, and using a VPN to reach another country's catalogue can break its terms. A VPN set to your own country, or split tunneling for the Disney+ app, avoids most errors.
